REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah said religious tolerance is strictly observed in the implementation of sharia law in Aceh.
"Implementation of sharia law in Aceh is highly tolerant different than in Middle East. Here Muslims and non Muslims could live in peace," Zaini said here on Tuesday.
The government made the statement in a meeting with foreign envoys from a number of European countries including Ambassadors Federico Failla of Italy, Thomas Smetanka of the Czech Republic, and Georg Witchel of Germany and the European Union Ambassador Oloof Skog.
Zaini said implementation of the sharia law "is like flesh and blood" united and complementing each other. It is part of tradition."
He asked the ambassador to tell the international communities that the condition is conducive for investment and to do business in Aceh.
Skog had said they came to Aceh to see the condition in the province 10 years after the disaster inflicted by tsunami in December 2004.
He said they would not question implementation of sharia law in the predominantly Muslim province.
There are important issues that needed more serious addressing in Aceh such as investment and economic development, he said.
