REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said the sharia financial sector has a role in the development so it should be maintained and developed.

"The expansion of the sharia financial market share is still very open and based on World Bank in 2014, there were 36.1 percent of adults in Indonesia who have an account at a formal financial institution," President Jokowi said on Sunday when attending a function to launch the "I Love sharia Finance" program, initiated by the Financial Service Authority (OJK).

Jokowi explained that today the number of sharia financial customers has reached over 18 million accounts, and Indonesia also has the largest micro financial institute in the world, and the largest publisher of sharia bonds.

Therefore the head of state said the sharia financial sector should continue to be developed.

"The key to develop the sharia financing is to build public understanding in sustainable manner, to build service innovation, and to protect the customers," the president noted.
