Govt asks UK to freeze Century assets

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Amir Syamsuddin met with Attorney General of Jersey UK to ask the country to freeze assets derived from criminal acts of Bank Century.

"We wanted to request document of mutual aid or mutual legal assistance (MLA) to freeze assets from criminal acts of Bank Century," Syamsuddin said on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Attorney General of Jersey conveyed support and commitment to follow MLA of Indonesia over the case of Bank Century. Indonesian government also wanted to increase legal cooperation between both countries in assets recovery and extradition process of Rafat Ali Rizvi, a convict in Bank Century case.

Since four years ago, Indonesia and UK worked together to process Rizvi's extradition to Indonesia in order to send him to prison. 

During the meeting, Attorney General of Jersey also asked two main issues in return. the two issues are on capital punishment and cooperation of legal transfer of sentenced person. UK then can ask Indonesia to deport its citizens who are serving sentences in Indonesia.

"UK government can ask the deportation of British citizens, Lindsay Sandifor and Gareth Dane Cashmore in order to serve their sentences in UK," Syamsuddin added.
