REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries (KKP) managed to convince the competent authority of Korea (National Fishery Products Quality Management Service) to approve an increase in the number of fish processing units (UPI) that can be exported to Korea. Head of KKP Quality Agency Ishartini said this was the result of negotiations so far.

Ishartini explained that Indonesia and Korea are bound by the bilateral equivalence agreement SJMKHP, namely “Arrangement on the Cooperation in Quality Control and Hygiene Safety of Import and Export Fish and Fishery Products” which provides advantages for the trade in fishery commodities of both countries.

In addition, the CCP, as a policy participant in the marine and fisheries sector as well as the competent authority of the system of quality assurance and safety of fishery products (SJMKHP), is able to ensure that the system applicable downstream is equivalent and harmonious with international standards, is consistent, robust, and recognized by the country of export destination (recognized).

“With an agreement with Korea, we can conduct pre-border inspection to ensure the implementation of quality assurance downstream,” Ishartini said in a written statement in Jakarta, Monday (7/4/2025).

Ishartini said this has a positive effect in speeding up dwelling time at the entry point, then if there are changes to rules and/or constraints we will get exclusive notifications so that they can be dealt with quickly. Previously, Ishartini, KKP and NFQS had carried out a joint inspection of SJMKHP in Indonesia in August 2024 with satisfactory results, so Korea finally announced that 11 fish export companies submitted by the CCP received approval for export to Korea.

“With the addition of 11 UPIs by Korea, the total number of UPIs that can be exported there is 660 units,” Ishartini said.

Ishartini said as many as 11 UPIs were already able to export fish to Korea as of April 2, 2025. With more and more Indonesian fish companies registered abroad, Ishartini is optimistic that the KKP Quality Agency can further contribute to the sustainability of the fishing industry as well as public health.

“A total of nine fisheries certifications handled by the Quality Agency in addition to quality assurance also to reassure the global market that Indonesian fishing operators are also capable of producing quality and quality products, thus minimizing rejection,” Ishartini said.

Earlier, Minister of Marine and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono confirmed that the quality or quality assurance of fishery products should be carried out from upstream to downstream, from production to products to the hands of consumers. This needs to be done to protect the fish's biological resources so that they remain healthy, quality, and microplastic-free.
