As Waste Awareness Day celebrated on every February 21, people of Yogyakarta have their own way to celebrate: a number of communities collected garbage from Vredeburg Fort to Sriwedari Street.

"We want to raise the people's awareness to keep our environtment clean," head of Development of Environtmental Capacity in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Kuncoro Hadi Purwoko, on Thursday.

Purwoko said that people must aware that without good management, waste would cause big problem to the city and their life. "We may hear sometimes that waste can spark conflict within a community," he added.

Waste Awareness Day is to commemorate the insident at waste disposal station at Leuwi Gajah, West Java. The incident was very tragic since the mountainous waste buried 143 people alive in 2005.
