REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Police said that the statement of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) which said Novel Baswedan not guilty was premature. "We see an early explanation which pleads Novel not guilty. It is too hasty," the Spokesman of Indonesian National Police, Boy Rafli Amar, said on Monday.

Police hope that each party respects the law enforcement process. Boy urges KPK not to hastily establish new investigation team. He said that the investigation on crimes was under the police authority.

He emphasized that police gathered facts then presented them to the court. It was only the court to decide either Baswedan guilty or not.

The incident on Friday night occurred after the KPK grilled Inspector General Djoko Susilo, who had been named a suspect in a corruption case, that morning. Baswedan is one of five police officers on loan to KPK choosing to stay with KPK after police order their return.

Police, which have been at loggerheads with KPK have ordered the return of 20 of their investigators from KPK. The officers are free to choose between staying with KPK or returning back to the police corps.

The police said the case of Novel was purely criminal shooting six suspects killing one on charge of stealing swallow bird nest when he was chief detective in Bengkulu in 2004. KPK, however, rejected the arrest attempt saying police have sought to criminalize KPK.
