REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Only five of the 13 light rail transit (LRT) stations in Palembang will be ready for the 2018 Asian Games. The five stations are Jakabaring, OPI Mall, Ampera, Palembang Icon and Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport.

The state construction firm PT Waskita Karya's project manager for LRT Palembang, Mashudi, said here on Friday that though eight stations would not be ready for the Asian Games, the project was on schedule and would be completed by the year-end.

"Currently we are focusing on completing the Jakabaring depot to accommodate the trains for assembling," Mashudi said.

On the issue of payments, Mashudi said there would be no impact on the project. The money "is supposed to be paid in 2018. But the government asked for a deferment until 2020. Actually, it is only technical and has no impact on the completion of the project," he added.

Two trains of the LRT Palembang will be launched by the Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, at Boom Baru Harbour this afternoon. The trains have been in Palembang since April 11.

LRT Palembang will have eight trains with a total of 24 wagons. Each train will have three wagons equipped with air-conditioners, CCTV and free Wi-Fi, and can carry 200-300 passengers. The engines are German-derived and directly supervised by Bombardier's company team. The LRT has the most modern rakes ever produced by the state-owned train manufacturer, PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA).
