Islamic Banking Targets Microfinance Sector

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A number of Islamic banks commit to expand their microfinance sector in 2012, as the sector has a huge potential market in Indonesia. BNI Syariah, for instance, will target microfinance sewctor by developing 55 micro units in a number of cities throughout Indonesia.     

“For the first time, we work on microfinance projects in a more systematic manner. We will add the micro units gradually,” said Rizqullah, General Director of BNI Syariah, recently.      

In a separate occasion, Bank Syariah Mandiri (BSM) is also to focus on small and medium enterprises (SME) finance by 73 percent. “BSM will target SME and this sector will be our main target in 2012,”  General Director of BSM, Yuslam Fauzi, explained. 

While BCA Syariah set some growth target in the sector in 2012. The bank started its pilot projects in three different cities, namely Bekasi, Tanggerang, and Bogor. ‘”We will review these pilot projects. If they shows significant progress, then we will replicate,” said John Kosasih, Director of BCA Syariah.
