REPUBLICA.CO.ID, Jakarta—crying is an unstoppable human trait, especially when grief-stricken. For example, when a person loses a loved one to death. Many couldn't help crying.

But crying actually has a deeper meaning and has to do with God. In the book “Laugh Ala Nabi Muhammad” by Nasir bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim as-Samarqandi and Usman bin Hasan ash-Shaikir explain about crying in view of the Quran. Crying in the view of the Quran relates to Allah SWT.

Some verses of the Quran have commanded humans to cry either expressly or indirectly. Among these is found in Surah al-Hasyr verse 18 which reads:

“O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every man pay attention to what he has done for tomorrow (the Hereafter). Fear God. Verily, Allah is sovereign over what you do.”

The verse does indeed unambiguously command people to cry. But it is implied to cry for remembering the problems of the afterlife. For those who do not remember their sins in the past, the next verse of the same Surah, Al-Hasyr verse 19, is referred to as wicked. The commandment to cry is not explicitly found in Surat At-Tur verses 7-11:

Inna 'ażāba rabbika lawāqi' (un). Mā lahū min dāfi' (in). Yauma tamūrus-samā'u maurā (n). Wa tasīrul-jibālu sairā (n). Fawailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukżibīn (a).

“The punishment of your Lord will surely take place. There is nothing that can resist it. The punishment of your Lord took place on the day (when) the heavens shook violently, and the mountains moved violently. In that day, woe to those who deny.”

Some Quranic verses also explicitly mention crying, especially when remembering one's sins. And Allah is not pleased with men who have fun in the world and laugh. As stated in Surat At-Taubah verse 82:

Falyaḍḥakū qalīlaw walyabkū kaīrā (n), jazā'am bimā kānū yaksibūn (a).

“Let them laugh a little (in the world) and cry a lot (in the Hereafter) in return for what they have always done.”

This verse shows that God is not pleased with those who like to laugh. For they show no sorrow for the problem of the Day of Resurrection and do not feel that the world is merely a treasure of persuasion.
