REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Crying for the departure of a loved one before Allah is very natural and humane. Islam, however, stresses not to mourn grief by being protracted.

Sheikh Aidh Al Qarni in his book The First Night in the Tomb Realm tells of a story from the wife of Sayyidina's grandson Ali bin Abi Thalib. In the beginning, Hasan ibn Hasan, the grandson of Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Thalib died leaving a wife and several young children. In fact, he was still very young at that time.

However, that is death. It comes with no regard to age, social status, or situation. When death comes to humans, makai a will remove them from the world phase. Thus, Hasan ibn Hasan died suddenly.

People also buried it. But when she saw this reality, Hasan ibn Hasan's wife was very sad and led her children to her husband's grave and then set up a tent there.

After the tent was set up, she swore by calling the name of Allah SWT, herself and her children, she would cry for her husband for a whole year. His grief was heartbreaking and he continued to cry.

A year later, precisely one night, he tore down his tent and went to take his children out of the grave. Suddenly, he heard a conversation.

One of them said, “Did they get what they were looking for? His friend replied, “No. They even despair and then leave.“

They don't find what they want, they don't find their stuff and their stuff. Any gift from Allah that we ask for is the best kind of gift from the best Giver.

That is, the dead in the grave do not answer the conversations of the living. Nor could he go out or meet those who wept in the realms of the world. He could not kiss his children's wives. That is why Allah says in the Qur'an Surat at-Thur verse 21:

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ۚ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ

“And those who believe, and their children and children who follow them in the faith, We meet them with their posterity (in heaven), and We do not diminish in the least the reward of their charity (benevolence). Everyone is tied to what they do.
