4.9-magnitude earthquake jolts Sumba Timur

The BMKG said the earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- An earthquake with magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Waingapu, Sumba Timur, East Nusa Tenggara, on Friday. The quake with epicenter in the sea southeast of Sumba Timur at a depth of 10 kilometers hit at 15.58 local time, the Meteorology and Geophysics office (BMKG) said.

There was no casualty and damage to property reported. There was no sign of aftershock to follow the quake. "Quake would not cause tsunami," head of the Kupang BMKG Robert Owen Wahyu said here on Friday.

The country has been rocked by major earthquakes in the past two months with the most devastating the quake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi.

July 30 until August, a number of major quakes hit Lombok causing the death of more than 500 people and a month later a big quake that triggered tsunami swept across the western regions of Central Sulawesi leaving a scene of disasters with more than 2,000 lives lost .

On Thursday,a quake 6.3 on the Richter scale killed at least three people in East Java. The tremor was felt in Bali where the annual meeting if the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank is underway with tens of thousands of delegates and other participants from 189 countries.
