Police ask for proof of alleged engineering terror attacks

Not even Hollywood's best play director can engineer the bloody riots, police say.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Police have asked for proof of allegation by social media users that police engineered the terror attacks which have jolted the nation over the past two weeks. Police chief spokesman Brig.Gen. Mohammad Iqbal said the state police demand proof from those saying that the terror attacks in East Java and Riau were a fabrication

"Not even Hollywood's best play director could engineer the bloody riots at the headquarters of Police Mobile Brigade, suicide bombings in Surabaya, Sidoarjo and Riau," Iqbal said here on Monday.

He said police want to ask for proof from whoever have said that the incidents were engineered by police.

He said a number of citizens of the net (Netizens) have been nabbed by police on charge of spreading hate speeches and libels in social media related to the terror attacks over the past two weeks. Police regretted that the law enforcement agency had been accused of engineering a number of terror attacks in Indonesia.

"Freedom to express opinions is different from spreading hate speeches. Police are in discomfort with the engineering brand. We are awaiting proof from whoever have said the engineering allegation," he said.

On Sunday morning on May 13, three Christian churches in Surabaya were attacked by terrorists in suicide bombings, leaving score of people dead including the six attackers who were of a family - the father, mother and two daughters and two sons.

On the next day another terrorist family of five - father, mother two sons and an 8-year old daughter attacked police office in Surabaya with suicide bombs killing themselves excepting the eight year old girl.

In Riau, four terrorists were shot dead when trying to attack the Riau police headquarters in Pekanbaru. A police officer was killed hit by the car driven by the terrorist.

In the following days police succeeded in rounding up tens of terrorist suspects mainly in East Java and West Java.

The terror attacks in Surabaya came only four days after riots by around 150 terrorist suspects breaking their detention cells, killing five police officers in the headquarters of police's mobile brigade headquarters in Depok, West Java.
