REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Busyro Mugoddas, former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman, said the government had to solve the case of attack to senior investigator of the anti-graft body, Novel Baswedan. It is a matter of shame for the nation that the case of Novel who was attacked last year, remain unsolved until now, he stated.
"Yes, it brings shame to the nation and country since such a simple case is still unsolved a year later following no signs of seriousness from the Police (Polri) and government," he noted here, Thursday.
There is pressure from the community that believes in law enforcement regarding the case of attempted murder of Novel Baswedan, he added.
Singer Melanie Subono takes part in the rally to commemorate 1 year of attack to senior anti-graft body investigator Novel Baswedan in front of Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (April 11).
"We are among those who have demanded the president to form a joint fact-finding team since the first day (of the case). Until now, a year on, there is no response," he pointed out.
Hence, the National Commission of Human Rights has set up a joint fact-finding team, tasked with a huge responsibility that should have been borne by a state institution, he remarked.
"We encourage them to find objective facts that must be made known to the public," he noted.
He said the president should form a joint fact-finding team like that for the case of Munir Thalib, a human rights defender, who was assassinated 14 years ago. The president should not leave the Baswedan case in the hands of the National Police alone, he added.
On April 11, 2017, Novel was fatally attacked while heading home after performing Fajr, or the Dawn prayer, at a mosque nearby when two motorcyclists hurled acid on his face that injured his eyes, particularly the left eye. He is currently being treated in a Singapore hospital.
Novel Baswedan, a 40-year-old retired police officer, had joined the anti-graft agency in 2007 and since then had been frequently terrorized and attacked. Novel, who has been handling high-profile corruption cases, was hit by a car while driving a motorcycle on his way to the KPK building in 2016.
