REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) established a team to monitor legal process of Novel Baswedan's acid attack case. The investigation of the case by the police was assessed protracted and has not been able to reveal the perpetrators.

The establishment of the special team is in accordance with Law No. 39/1999 on Human Rights, particularly in Article 89 on the implementation of monitoring functions. According to Legal Monitoring team for Novel's attack case, Sandrayati Moniaga, the team is formed to encourage the acceleration of the settlement of this case.

"It is formed by Komnas HAM based on the Plenary Session in last February, where there was a lot of pressures and demands from the society to solve the case immediately," said Sandrayati on Friday (March 9).

Legal Monitoring team for Novel's attack case will be on duty for three months ahead started on February. The team will give recommendations based on monitoring results to relevant stakeholders.

During the monitoring process, the team will collect documents, listen to information from Novel as well as witnesses and the police. Sandrayati asserted, the monitoring team ensured the legal process of the case experienced by Novel in accordance with the human rights corridor, with the principles of fair trial law, and revealed various obstacles experienced in the legal process of the case.

Furthermore, Sandrayati said her team will work together with the President, Police, KPK, human rights organizations, as well as the community to ensure law enforcement justice. The other members of the team are Ahmad Taufan Damanik, Choirul Anam, Franz Magnis- Suseno, Abdul Munir Mulkhan, Alissa Wahid and Bivitri Susanti.

On April 11, 2017, Novel was fatally attacked by two motorcyclists who hurled acid on his face that injured his eyes, particularly the left eye, while he was heading home after performing Fajr, or the Dawn prayers, at a mosque nearby.

Novel lost vision in his left eye and has been receiving medical treatment in Singapore. The police have yet to identify the perpetrators after almost a year of investigation.
