KPK examines Hilman in alleged obstruction of justice case

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- JAKARTA -- Former Metro TV stringer, Hilman Mattauch admitted investigators of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has grilled him with 10 questions. Focus of the examination was on car accident occurred during the time Setya Novanto's name listed in the wanted list of KPK and National Police. Hilman drove Novanto the night his car bumped into an electricity pole in Permata Hijau area, South Jakarta on November 16, 2017.

"The examination was still the same as previous. I was asked 10 questions," Hilman said after being examined in KPK office, Jakarta, on Tuesday (January 8).

Nevertheless, Hilman refused to explain in detail about the matter of examination. He was first summoned on December 11, 2017.

According to KPK spokesman, Febri Diansyah, the examination was to further investigate the accident happened to defendant of e-ID card graft case, Setya Novanto while he was a fugitive. KPK tried to reveal whether there was obstruction of justice due to the disappearance of Novanto. KPK suspected certain parties jointly or alone tried to prevent the handling e-ID card graft case. "Some witnesses have been examined," he said.

Febri said, before the accident, KPK has asked the Police to put Novanto's name in the wanted list. Therefore, anyone who tried to hide Novanto or manipulate the condition may be subject to criminal sanctions. 

"We will investigate it throughly. We can not inform any further, especially on the probable actor since the case is still in the stage of investigation," he said.

On the evening of November 15, 2017, the anti-graft agency visited Novanto's residence to arrest him for having frequently failed to meet the KPK's summons in a graft case concerning the electronic identity card project worth over Rp5 trillion. The state is estimated to have lost Rp2.3 trillion due to the corruption. Novanto was no where to be found. KPK tried to persuade Novanto to surrender since the investigators failed to meet him at his house until early of November 16, 2017.

After 24 hours since the arrest warrant was issued, KPK put the suspect in the wanted list (DPO).

Later, on the night of November 16, 2017, Novanto was on the news. He was said to be unconscious since the car that he was riding in involved in a single accident. He was rushed to the Emergency Room of Medika Permata Hijau hospital, South Jakarta.

On November 18, 2017, Novanto was transferred to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) under KPK surveillance. At the same day, KPK named him detainee without sacrificing Novanto's rights to get medical treatment.

On November 19, 2017, Novanto was released from the hospital. The doctors said, he was fit to be investigated.
