REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Expert on Constitutional Law, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, assessed that the new law on Mass Organization could pose a serious problem for Muslims in Indonesia.
He said, the Lieu of Law (Perppu) No. 2/2017 on Mass Organizations (Ormas) that has been passed into law by House of Representatives could be a tool to repress and dismiss Islamic mass organization that are opposing the government.
On the other hand, Yusril noticed, the political power of those who supports Islamic mass organizations in the House is extremely weak.
Yusril admitted, he had predicted that the House will approve Perppu Ormas. Moreover, when voting, the vote from faction pro to the Perppu Ormas were larger than the opponents.
He assessed, the House consideration on this matter is very political. In contrast to the Constitutional Court that examines Perppu Ormas solely on juridical-constitutional aspects.
"PDIP, Golkar, Nasdem, Hanura, PKB and PPP are parties supporting Joko Widodo administration. They will certainly accept Perppu Ormas. Democratic party which was expected to reject, finally show the opposite stance," he said.
