REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PANGKALPINANG -- Head of the Ministry of Maritime and Fishery's Fish Quarantine Agency for Quality Control and Fishery Product Safety, Rina, stated that Indonesia's fish stock have reached 12 million tons at the moment.
The number indicated a 100 percent increase compared to the previous year, when the number was recorded to be at 6 million tons.
"The registration results in 2016 showed that Indonesia's fish stock have reached 12 million tons, and it is due to the regulations that have been applied as well as the recovery of the Indonesian ecosystem," Rina stated in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Island, on Monday.
She further explained that the regulations on fishing have been tightened; for example, the ministry has regulated a number of ships that often fish in large numbers without any supervisions, because the practice could often affect the catch of local fishermen.
"At the moment, such issues have been handled appropriately, leading to an increase in the exchange value of local fishermen and decrease in prices of fish," she elaborated.
Rina noted that at the moment, the exchange value of local fishermen have gone up to 112 compared to the previous number at 100, despite the rise in prices of fishery products.
"When the exchange rate is only at 100, it means that these fishermen will spend all of their earnings for their family's day-to-day lives. When the price of goods rises in a country and income does not rise then the level of people's welfare in the country will go down.
Not only that, the fishery sector also contributed to the country's deflation last year, as the regulations and policies that were applied were appropriate and were able to increase fishermen's welfare, she added.
"At the moment, the lives of fishermen is improving and is better compared to other industry sectors," she concluded.Head of the Ministry of Maritime and Fishery's Fish Quarantine Agency for Quality Control and Fishery Product Safety, Rina, stated that Indonesia's fish stock have reached 12 million tons at the moment.
