REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A political observer Muchtar Effendi Harahap argued that President's recommendation in rector election would be a political party’s intervention to universities. It means that rector would be chosen by the President who was a cadre of political party.

"The policy gives more chances for political parties through the President to place a political party’s cadre as a rector,” said Muchtar to Republika.co.id on Friday (June 2).

Muchtar added that political parties had tendencies to accommodate the needs of their cadres and sympathizers. “It might be that the universities would be a money machine for political parties,” he said.

He use the term ‘parpolisasi’ (link all things to political parties) to refer to the upcoming phenomenon. He said it was a way to take political party’s cadre to certain position. It might increase the transactional culture of political party to other institutions.

On Thursday, Interior Minister Tjahjo Kumolo said the government plan to make a policy that rector election should involve President’s recommendation. It was a respond of massive radicalism within the campuses.

Tjahjo said, recently, rector election was a part of the responsibility of Ministry of Research, Technology and Universities. The ministry had an authority in the election.

“Based on our communication with the State Secretary, President, and Ministry of Research, Technology and Universities, it was a final decision that rector should be from Mr. President,” said Tjahjo to reporters at his office.

He added that there would be a forum of President and the related ministry in having a unity in electing the rector. The government would make a mechanism adjustment of rector election. If an elected rector was known to be a member of radical group, it would be informed to the ministry.
