REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inducted Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as chief of the State Intelligence Board (BIN) on Friday evening, replacing Sutiyoso who held the post for nearly a year.

The president installed and swore in Budi Gunawan at the Merdeka Palace in the presence of several ministers and military and police officials.

He was installed as new BIN chief after securing a seal of approval from the House of Representatives (DPR) at a plenary meeting held Thursday.

A day before the DPR approved his appointment, Budi underwent a fit and proper test conducted by the House Commission I.

He was deputy chief of the National Police before being appointed to the post of BIN chief.

With the post of deputy National Police chief falling vacant, National Police chief General Tito Karnavian is expected to propose a replacement soon.

The candidate for deputy National Police chief will be the most senior police officer who will be inducted after Budi is formally made BIN chief, according to Tito.
