REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An earthquake magnitude 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted at sea, Mentawai Islands, Sumatra, on Tuesday (21/6) at 09:23 pm.
The earthquake happened with epicenter depth of 34 kilometers (km) at 98 km Southeast Mentawai Islands. However, no potential cause tsunami. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) report the epicenter of tectonic earthquake from seduction path of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate Australia.
Head of Data Information and Public Relations of National Mitigation Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, the earthquake shock felt by the local communities of about 20 seconds in southwestern Seberut. Earthquake felt in Tua Pejat about 15 seconds.
He added, the people were panicked and left their houses, but the condition now normal.
"Until now, no report of damage caused by the earthquake," he said on Tuesday (21/6).
