REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- Plan to build a port and special economic zone in the city of Ambon is part of the government sea toll project, the state-owned port operator PT Pelindo IV said.
The port and special economic zone will occupy 250 hectares in the city, Pelindo IV human resources manager Ramdan Affan said here on Thursday.
Ramdan said if the project is implemented thousands of new jobs would be open mainly for local people.
"Certainly local people would be given the priority in the employment in the port area and factories which are also to be built there," he said.
The opening of the port and special economic zone would contribute to boosting economic development in the region, he said.
Expansion and modernization of the Ambon port would support sea toll project that would facilitate sea transport between the western part of the country and eastern region especially Papua.
"Papua already handles direct exports. Hopefully Ambon could do the same," he said.
Exports and imports for Ambon and Papua would no longer have to be made via Surabaya if the port project has been implemented.
Exports or imports could be handled via Ambon, saving a lot of cost and time, he added.
"Fish exported from Ambon would be more competitive in price as a lot of transport cost has been cut," he cited.
