REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Thousands of workers staged a rally in the National Monument (Monas) square here on Saturday, calling for a stop to multinational companies laying off workers.

Some 30 thousand workers staged rallies in several major cities on the same day, President of the Confederation of the Indonesian Labor Unions (KSPI), Said Iqbal, said.

"In their rally today, 30 thousand workers echoed two demands -- rejecting the mass layoff of Indonesian workers and low wages, and (called on the government) to revoke Government Regulation No. 78/2015," he said.

Similar rallies were also held in other major cities including Medan, Surabaya, Semarang and Batang on Saturday.

Thousands of workers began converging at the Monas square at 10.00 a.m. They marched from the Indosat roundabout in the southwestern part of the Monas square to the State Palace, north of the square.
