REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TAROUDANT –-  Birmingham Central Mosque in the United Kingdom (UK) would be offering free hot meals for those in need and homeless from 24th December through 1st January, ending at 5:00 p.m. local time. In partnership with Birmingham Soup Kitchen, the mosque was expecting to serve hundreds of homeless people during the holiday season.

“Hot meals will be served from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day,” the organizers said, as reported by The Independent.

Birmingham has one of the worst rates for homelessness in the country, with about 2,500 people homeless or living in temporary accommodation in the city streets.

Kasim Choudry, community activist and one of the organizers of the meal giveaway told that the mosque decided to offer meals for the poor because many of the existing services that homeless people rely on in the city close for the holidays.

“That’s why we chose to do it, really. We are open anyway and it’s nice to be able to help when it’s needed most,” Choudry said.

He added that Birmingham is an amazing city that thrives on diversity and together as one community we can unite as one to tackle poverty.
