Students raise funds for victims of Haze disaster

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- Tens of students from different universities in the East Java city of Malang raised funds and performed joint prayers on Wednesday for the victims of haze disaster in Indonesia.

As part of the fund-raising activity, some students performed a theatrical dance, depicting people suffering from an acute respiratory disease after having inhaled too much smoke from land and forest fires.

The fund-raising activity involved students from different universities in Malang. They all are members of Campus Islamic Propagation Forum (FSLDK), the rally's coordinator, Sutrisno, said on the sidelines of the fund-raising activity held in front of the entrance of Brawijaya University in Malang.

He said a similar activity was also held at the campus of Muhammadiyah University in Malang.

Through the activity, the students managed to collect some Rp6 million in cash.

"Besides raising funds for the victims of the haze disaster, we also protested against forest fires in several provinces. The haze disaster has been occurring (almost every year) since tens of years now but no solution has been found," he said.

Haze has affecting public health and disturbing daily activities in Indonesia and neighboring countries.

Teams from Singapore and Malaysia joined the local forest and land fire prevention task force to commence fire extinguishing operations on Monday, focusing on the hotspots in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) district in South Sumatra, which was hit the hardest by land and forest fires.
