REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources recommended the construction of a nuclear power plant in Indonesia starts in 2024. It was stated by the head of National Nuclear Energy Agency, Djarot S Wisnubroto.

"Therefore, National Nuclear Energy Agency (Batan) expected, Indonesian government could announce a ‘go-nuclear!’ campaign in 2015, so that the recommendation could be realized," he said in Yogyakarta, Wednesday (26/8).

Djarot explained that the construction of a nuclear power plant normally takes seven to ten years.

"Thus, it could be ideal, if the government announced a ‘go nuclear!’ by 2015. Nuclear power plant takes a long time, because we have to be careful and put the safety factor," he added.

Conducting a survey and determining the site will take three years. He must ensure a track record of seismicity at the place where the nuclear power plant will be built.

"So, we pay much attention to the security issue. If the nuclear power plant that will be built in Bangka Belitung, is realized, then it will be able to generate 5,000 megawatts of electricity supply,” he said.

Head of Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten), Jazi Eko Istianto, said permission for the construction of nuclear power plants normally takes 17 years.

"For nuclear study in Bangka Belitung, Bapeten issued permits up to eight years," said Jazi.
