REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA –- President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia has potential geothermal energy. Even 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential is available in Indonesia. Sources of geothermal energy spread in Sumatera, Java, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua.

"I want us to reduce the use of fossil energy and change it with geothermal energy,” said the President while giving a speech at the opening of the Exhibition and Convention of Renewable Energy and Geothermal, Wednesday (19/8) in Jakarta.

The use of fossil energy was 95 percent of the national energy. These were 47 percent oil, 24 percent natural gas, and 24 percent coal. While the use of renewable energy only reached about 5 percent.

In fact Indonesia has become an importer of petroleum energy sources from fossil energy that can possibly run out.

Indonesia actually has great potential in new and renewable energy. The renewable energy are biofuel, biomass, geothermal, hydro, wind, solar, and others. The National Energy Policy has targeted the use of renewable energy increase to 23 percent in 2025.
