REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEOUL -- Two South Korean soldiers were wounded Monday as an explosive was detonated for an unidentified reason at the demilitarized zone on the South side, YTN and Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday.
The explosion occurred at about 7:40 a.m. local time while soldiers of the First Infantry Division's search battalion were conducting search operations near the western land border in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province.
Buried landmine or booby trap was estimated to have been detonated accidentally. Two staff sergeants suffered heavy injury on their legs.
They were taken to a nearby military hospital to undergo emergency surgery, but those were not life-threatening injuries. The exact cause of the incident is under investigation.
