REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) has unanimously accepted the resignation of its general chairman, Sutiyoso, who will serve as the chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).
For the sake of the state's task mandated to Sutiyoso, all members of the PKPI are willing to let him resign from the party's chairmanship position, Secretary General of the PKPI Didi Supriyanto said here on Monday.
"Pak (Mr.) Sutiyoso once said that the interest of the country should come first, above the interests of others," Supriyanto pointed out.
In addition to discussing Sutiyoso's resignation letter at the plenary meeting, the party also deliberated over who would replace him.
Eventually, Vice Chairman of the PKPI Isran Noor was mandated as the acting chairman of the party.
"At the plenary meeting, the party gave complete power to Isran Noor to handle the duties of the general chairman," Supriyanto affirmed.
Moreover, he added that the PKPI will hold an extraordinary congress from August 20 to 23.
On Tuesday last week, all political party factions of Commission I of the House of Representatives had agreed to accept retired army lieutenant general Sutiyoso as the next chief of the BIN.
"Ten factions gave their statements after we heard Sutiyoso's vision, mission, and program and studied them," Chairman of Commission I Mahfudz Siddiq had noted during an internal meeting of the commission.
