REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Related to the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States, Commission VIII Chairman of House of Representatives (DPR) Saleh Partaonan Daulay said that same-sex marriage was contrary to any religious basis. Indonesia is a country that respects religion, so that it will never happen in Indonesia.

"In Indonesia, (the same-sex marriage) will never happen. Because, for example, it is done outside of religious traditions means that it is not real marriage, "Saleh said when contacted by ROL on Sunday, June 28.

Saleh explained, besides Islam, other religions also did not allow same-sex marriage. Including the Vatican, said Saleh. Vatican until today does not not give the freedom to perform same-sex marriages.

"Marriage is, principally, the great teachings of religious, noble teachings of religious traditions. Therefore, any marriage that is done outside the rules and teachings of religion is certainly not acceptable," he said firmly.

He said the marriage was more into the realm of religion rather than the state. Therefore religion has great authority in matters of marriage, including same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, the state must respect religion. State, he said firmly, should not provide excess opportunities as opposed to religion. Because, both of these could not be contradict.

"The State must provide facilities to the religions. Facilitating the religious people, not dictate religion to legalize that sort of thing," he said firmly.
