REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TEGAL -- Vice President who is also Chairman of Indonesia Mosques Council (DMI), Jusuf Kalla requested mosques in Indonesia not to play cassettes of Quran recitals and intentionally broadcast it through the mosques.

"Don’t use cassettes. It should be someone read it (Quran) directly, [Allah] will give reward for it ,” he said when opening the astral conjunction of Ulama of the 5th MUI Fatwa Commission in Tegal, Central Java, on Monday, June 8. According to him, playing the Quran recital tapes was quite disturbing and just making noise pollution.

He told the story when he returned to his home in Makassar, South Sulawesi. He was surprised because at 04.00 am woken by Quran recitals sound of four mosques around the house. Which makes it even more upset, it was not the person whom read it, but the tapes.

"It’s just tapes that read it (Quran). If people read Quran, it could be rewarded. If the tape, could not it? It became sin, because we were distracted. It was annoying. [It’s] noise pollution," he said.

In Indonesia, because there were many Muslims, the mosques were built adjacent, so before dawn every mosque would play recital cassettes and the voice would be noisy.

He also pointed out in the Middle East, there was no recital cassettes that intentionally played aloud. There was only the sound of azan which shouted in every mosque. The worship, especially at dawn, usually took about 30 minutes.

"No need to wake people an hour earlier," he said.

He said, it will be formulated in the Indonesian Mosque Council regulations. JK also requested the scholars to spread the message because he admitted that DMI has not been able to do so.

"It was important to me, which seem trivial but important to resolve together," he said.
