REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PASURUAN -- A durian fruit festival at the Cheng Ho mosque in Pasuruan, East Java, on Saturday saw the distribution of some 1,086 durian fruits for free, according to an official.
"We will give out 1,086 durian fruits of various types such as Karim, Bajul, Montong, Kakap and Sisir," head of Pasuruan District Irsyad Yusuf said while opening the festival.
According to him, the sub-districts in Pasuruan that produce the fruit are Purwosari, Purwodadi, Pasrepan, Sukorejo, Lumbang, Tutur, Tosari, and Prigen.
"This product has great market potential and will continue to be developed in Pasuruan in an effort to step up local people's welfare," he stated.
According to Yusuf, the durian festival, which is held twice every year, is aimed at populist economic development as well as for improving local revenues.
Yusuf also inaugurated a tourism fruit market worth Rp3 billion in the region.
