REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Political observer from the University of Pelita Harapan (UPH) Victor Silaen said he was relieved to hear that President Joko Widodo finally decided not to install controversial Comr.Gen Budi Gunawan as new police chief.
"The decision to name acting police chief Comr.Gen Badrodin Haiti to take over the job is quite a relief at least for the time being," Victor said after the long awaited announcement by the president.
Jokowi said controversy over Budi Gunawan has forced him to cancel installation of the three star general as new police
Budi Gunawan was the sole police chief candidate proposed by the president to the Parliament and the Parliament gave its approval despite announcement by the Corruption Eradication Commission two days earlier declaring Budi Gunawan a suspect in corruption case.
The KPK's announcement that came only a day before the fit and proper test by the Parliament triggered conflict between police and KPK for over a month that put the president in unpleasant position.
Victor said Badrodin Haiti may not be approved by the Parliament, which has strongly urged the president to go ahead installing Budi Gunawan amid strong public opposition.
However, Badrodin still has big chance of being approved by the Parliament as he is a deputy police chief and acting police chief, he said.
At the same time President Jokowi proposed three new commissioners of KPK to replace chairman Abraham Samad and Deputy chairman Bambang Widjajanto both were charged by police with past crimes before they joined KPK and another commissioner who ended his term.
The three new commissioners are Taufiqurrahman Ruki Indriyanto Seno Aji and Johan Budi.
