REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian and Malaysian governments have agreed to develop roads and other infrastructures in areas along either side of their borders, particularly in Entikong and Tebedu.

"We discussed the development of roads and problems that existed in border areas, particularly on the throughways in Entikong, Indonesia, and Tebedu in Sarawak State, Malaysia," Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Oesman Sapta Odang said here on Wednesday (11/2).

Infrastructure and Communication Minister for Sarawak State in Malaysia Dato Seri Michael Maryin Anak Jawong and his delegation visited Indonesia and met with Oesman in the MPR building.

According to Oesman, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has visited areas in Entikong to Tebedu to understand the problems there.

"The President has promised to solve all the issues affecting infrastructure development on the Indonesia-Malaysia border in the next two years," Oesman noted.

The Deputy Chairman added both governments have agreed to build better roads in the next two years.

Oesman remarked that citizens who disobey the agreement to utilize roads in border regions will have to face sanctions in their respective countries.

"Indonesia will build a toll road and other infrastructure facilities in Entikong to support border development," Oesman pointed out.

Dato Seri Michael Maryin revealed that in 2011, the Malaysian government built a dry port in Tebedu.

The inland port will manage goods distribution, including logistics, which will accommodate thousands of containers per year.

"The dry port has been operational since 2011. Although the facility has distributed more than 2,000 containers, there have been some disruptions on the throughway there," the Minister stated.
