REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANTUL -- Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Indroyono Soesilo encouraged development of the tourism sector in Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas in order to increase tourist arrivals.

"We have been encouraging the tourism sector in Yogyakarta. Around 88,000 foreign tourists visited Yogyakarta each year," Indroyono Soesilo said here on Friday.

"If we calculate the number, it is only about 6,600 people each month," he stated.

"It is only about 200 foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta each day. So we will work to improve tourism facilities and infrastructure, as well as tourist sites," he said.

According to the minister, local governments could improve the tourism industry by improving roads, while the central government was expected to build an international airport in Kulon Progo.

"We should agree about improving tourism in Yogyakarta, and I am also glad that the government will build an international airport in Kulon Progo," he said.

Also, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and officials from the Ministry of Research and Technology, as well as the Cilacap head, reviewed ice making and water tanks, which are part of new renewable energy facilities.

"We hope the technological innovations can be developed and expanded for the tourism industry in Bantul," he said.
