REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANGKOK -- Nearly 200,000 police were mobilized to ensure order and safety at Thailand's New Year countdown events nationwide tonight, according to deputy national police chief Pol Gen Ruangsak Jarit-ek.

The deputy national police chief gave assurences of police preparedness while inspecting a countdown venue at the Asiatique shopping centre on Charoen Krung Road in the capital.

He said that there would be New Year countdown events on 28 locations in 16 provinces tonight.

Apart from the mobilization of almost 200,000 officers, all police stations were ordered to place their their rapid movement units -- more than 1,500 -- on standby, so that they could reach scenes of incidents within five minutes, Gen Ruangsak said.

In Bangkok, the New Year countdown events are set at CentralWorld and Asiatique shopping centres and at the Sanam Luang ground.

Police will facilitate traffic flows in their vicinities, search for weapons and patrol to prevent any acts of terror as happened in 2006.

Police are checking public phone booths and dust bins there.
