REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DENPASAR -- At least nine residents of Bali's provincial city of Denpasar sustained injuries while handling firecrackers as New Year's eve celebrations ended with a trip to the hospital for intensive treatment.

"Since last night, there have been nine patients, including a 41-year-old man, who were exposed to fireworks," the public relations officer of the Sanglah General Hospital Dr Kadek Nariyantha remarked here on Thursday (1/1).

Two of the nine residents from different age groups were seriously injured and were still being hospitalized, Nariyantha stated, adding that the other seven patients have been given discharge from the hospital.

Last year, the number of victims of firecracker explosions reached 15 in Denpasar, of which five received intensive care at the hospital, the spokesman noted.
