REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said that the increasing of intolerance was among issues that drove government to draft bill on religious community's protection.

He underlined five reasons including the need of protection to the rights of every religious follower in Indonesia, other than Islam, Christian, Catholic, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianist. "We are concerned that some people feel government does not facilitate their need," Minister Saifuddin said during his visit to Republika on Monday, December 22.

Secondly, the ministry needs to manage the domain on building the house of worship, either itsthe ministry's or local government's. 

Thirdly, the ministry is concerned over the the content of religious preaching from every religious community. "Sometimes its content explicitly abuses other religion(s) which potentially causes friction among people," he said.    

Fourthly, there is concern over violence towards religious minority. "That includes any religion depends on the region," he said then adding that Muslim could be also regarded as minority in certain areas like Bali and East Nusa Tenggara.

Lastly, the minister cited concern over the increase of intolerance cases. "For instance, how do we manage Sunni and Shiite in Islam. We will invite official religious assemblies," he said, referring to religious councils from different faiths in Indonesia.
