REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG - The provincial administration of East Nusa Tenggara will support the plan to reopen the Kupang-Darwin flight route to promote trilateral cooperation between three regions.

"The plan has been discussed with the delegation of the three regions for regional economy development, namely East Nusa Tenggara, Northern Territory (Australia), and Timor Leste," the Head of the Economy Bureau of East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Secretariat, Marius Ardu Jelamu, said on Friday.

According to him, the provincial administration would promote the Kupang-Darwin flight route and endorse the Kupang-Dili (Timor Leste)-Darwin additional flight.

"We need to coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation and communicate with the air carriers concerned regarding flight service preparations, Jelamu said, adding that the government had already granted permission to reopen the flight route.

The provincial administration was also reviewing the Kupang-Dili flight route along with the plan to reopen the Jakarta-Denpasar (Bali)-Dili flight route, he added.

"We will present our proposal to the government and the Garuda Indonesia management to promote these flight routes so the air carrier will have regular Jakarta-Denpasar-Kupang-Dili flights," Jelamu noted.

He remarked that the people in Timor Leste who want to go to Jakarta, Kupang and Denpasar, and vice versa would have another option besides the land transportation mode if the flight routes were reopened.

"People will no longer have to spend seven to eight hours to go to Kupang from Dili. The journey will only take about 45 minutes," Jelamu said.
