REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PINRANG -- The 'Bendoro' secondary irrigation project which will be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in Sidrap District, South Sulawesi, on Wednesday, is expected to irrigate 12 thousand hectares of rice fields, an official said.
"The President will inaugurate the project with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday. The irrigation project has a width of six meters and a length of 2.2 km," Hnizon, a local PAM Irrigation official, said on Wednesday (5/11).
He said President Jokowi would visit the district for the first time as a president. Local residents are happy with the president's visit to Sidrap District, South Sulawesi.
Abd Rahman, one of the Bendoro residents said that local residents so far could only have two planting and harvest seasons a year. The presence of the Bendoro irrigation project is expected to enable residents to have three times of planting and harvest seasons per annum.
"We hope the project will be able to irrigate all rice fields so that the agricultural production will be better," he said.
President Jokowi, left for Makassar to conduct a two-day working visit to three provinces in Sulawesi from Wednesday to Thursday.
The president and his entourage departed from Halim Perdanakusuma at 7.30 am on Wednesday for the working visit to the provinces of South Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi.
After arriving in Makassar, the president will make his way to Sidrap to inspect a new irrigation, and to meet and have lunch with the farmers there.
From Sidrap, President Jokowi will return to Makassar and on to West Sulawesi to inspect Cacao National Movement (Gernas Kakao) activity, and farming infrastructure.
Later on Thursday, the head of state will fly to Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi to observe irrigation, maritime toll road plan, and to attend the 12th national congress of the Family of Gadjah Mada University Alumni (Kagama).
The president is scheduled to return to Jakarta from Kendari on Thursday afternoon.
