REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Indroyono Soesilo said Indonesia's sovereignty in the sea is not yet fully recognized as some of the sea borders have yet to be negotiated with other countries.
One of the programs to be carried out concerning the country's sovereignty in the sea is to settle issues of sea borders, Indroyono said here on Tuesday.
He said upholding the country's sovereignty in the sea would be a priority working program of the government.
He said in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982, Indonesia's sea territory covers the sea 12 miles from the coast and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is 200 miles from the coasts.
However, the UNCLOS is not yet ratified by many countries that a number of countries have violated the Indonesian sea borders.
He said he would encourage and call on all countries to ratify the UNCLOS.
