Minister of Transportation must focus on developing multimodal services

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Former acting minister of transportation, Bambang Susantono, urged his successor, Ignasius Jonan, to focus on developing multimodal transportation services to reduce Indonesia's logistics costs.

"We hope some feasible projects, such as establishing airport trains and online platforms at seaports, are executed," Susantono said in his speech at the ceremony where he handed over the office to Jonan here Thursday (October 30).

Susantono cited the Soekarno-Hatta airport train project as an example of the kind of multimodal transportation programs that need to be continued. Multimodal transportation services, he added, should continue to be developed to ensure integration in the means of transportation in the country.

"Multimodal transportation services shrould be prioritized in the system to add depth to their functioning," Susantono, currently the Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), remarked.

Jonan agreed that multimodal transportation facilities should be developed to bring down logistics costs.

"We can reduce logistic cost wiith the development of multimodal transport services," he admitted, adding that government must resolve the issue of (developing) networks, particularly in the waters of Indonesia, to develop multimodal transport facilities.
