REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Former president Soeharto's daughter Siti Hediati Haryadi or Titiek Soeharto was among the new members of parliament to be inaugurated for the 2014-2019 term here on Wednesday.
Titiek Soeharto, a member of the Golkar Party, was elected as a House of Representatives (DPR) member in the legislative elections held on April 9. When asked to comment after the inauguration ceremony, Titiek Soeharto stated that she would be later assigned to the House Commission IV that dealt with fisheries, plantations, and agriculture.
"If God willing, I will be in Commission IV," she stated. "In the past, we have enjoyed food self-sufficiency, but now, we have to import everything, and so, there must be something wrong, which must be tackled," Titiek pointed out her reasons to join the commisssion.
She did not divulge details about the program that she planned to introduce in Commission IV. When questioned about the rumors regarding her nomination as the chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Titiek Soeharto claimed having no knowledge of it.
"I did not know and I have never nominated myself. I never think about it but if I am appointed, (thank God I will carry it out). But, if I am not, it is alright. I will continue with my duty," she remarked.
A total of 560 new members of the DPR for the 2014-2019 term were sworn in at an inauguration ceremony here on Wednesday. Concurrently, a total of 128 members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and members of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), which comprised DPR and DPD members, also took oath during the ceremony attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President Boediono, several cabinet members, foreign envoys, and other invitees.
