REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PANDEGLANG -- Pandeglang District Head Erwan Kurtubi has called for joint efforts by all public elements to protect the single-horned Javan rhinos from extinction.

"Let us make the critically endangered Javan rhinos our common pride and protect them together from extinction," Kurtubi emphasized here on Monday.

Among the five rhino species, the Javan single-horned rhinos are at the brink of extinction with only a few surviving in the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) after the last Javan rhino in Vietnam was poached in 2010.

Therefore, Kurtubi reiterated that protecting the endangered rhinos from the verge of extinction was not only the responsibility of the government but also of all the public elements, particularly the community of Pandeglang district.

He stated that the government and the community of Pandeglang should feel fortunate because they still have the rarest rhinos in Ujung Kulon.

Further, he affirmed that the Pandeglang district administration is always ready to assist in every effort, with all its authority and capability, to save the Javan rhinos.

Kurtubi explained that the Javan rhinos are used as the symbol of Pandeglang district as they are the pride of the government and local community.

The public should love such rare animals, which are on the brink of extinction, stated Javan rhino ambassador Desi Ratnasari during a recent visit to Pandeglang.

"Saving the Javan rhino is not an easy job, if it is not carried out jointly by all parties, including the public," Desi remarked at the time.

She noted that for some parties, preserving the rhinos may be a small step, but the efforts taken will become a giant step when all public elements understand its importance.

According to her, rescuing the single-horned rhinos in Ujung Kulon National Park was important and achievable if there is awareness among the public to save them from extinction.

"Saving the Javan rhino is part of saving the environment, and therefore, the public should love these animals as they love themselves," Desi stressed.

She stated that saving the environment was as crucial as saving the rhinos from extinction.

"If we realize the importance of saving the environment and are willing to listen to nature, we will be spared from unwanted incidents such as natural disasters," Desi remarked.
