REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) assessing Java is still need additional power supply in the coming year of 2019.

This follows the plan of State Electricity Company  to review the economics of the project submarine cable or HVDC (high voltage direct current) 500 kilo Volt (kV) which will be sent electricity by 3 thousand Mega Watts (MW) from Sumatra to Java ,

Director General of Electricity Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Jarman explained, although Java will later get an additional power supply of 23 thousand MW in the 35 thousand MW project, but its reserved margins of electricity in Java Island is still considered a mediocre percent of 30.

During the next five years, he added, with electricity consumption growing Jarman judge that the reserved margin will be increased the supply of electricity. One way is by running a development plan or HVDC submarine cable.

"Otherwise it will drop if we don’t add more power, and if it goes below the level it often goes out therefore it should be maintained. Indeed, this interconnection will fixed  the system of both Sumatra or Java. Therefore in the future we will have an interconnection with Asean Power Grid, it is the interconnection between the Asean countries, it has already been made and will be connected there, "he said.

Previously, State Electricity Company said it would reassess the economics of the project underground cables or HVDV (high voltage direct current) which will transmit electricity from the power plant to the mouth of the mine in Sumatra to Java. This follows the government's decision together with the State Electricity Company in Electrical Power Supply Business Plan from 2016 to 2025, which also set the sustainability of underground power cable projects.

Senior Manager Public Relations of State Electricity Company Agung Murdifi explained that it considered the economics of submarine cable project that needs to be done because the planning has been done a decade ago.

Current conditions, he added, is considered to be much different in terms of the economics. This calculation was taking into account a variety of variables, including oil prices and the rupiah against the US dollar.

"Yes of course we know that we planned the HVDC for a long time. Of course, State Electricity Company must see, for now how it will work in terms of the economic side. HVDC rights had long been planned since 2006. View of development now has to be revisited,” Agung said last week.
