REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - Chairman of the Surabaya City Legislative Council (DPRD) Armuji has rejected a proposal to procure new laptops for local members of parliament (MPs) on the ground they will not give them much benefit.

"There is no need to buy new laptops. What are they for? Right now many MPs have used iPad with far better quality," he said on Sunday.

Most of the laptops returned by old MPs were still good and could be used by new legislators, he said. The laptops need not be handed to new legislators. But if any of them needed the laptops they could contact the secretary of the legislative council, he said.

Actually, the procurement of laptops for DPRD members for the 2009-2014 period was not urgent. Even many old legislators did not bring the laptops when they worked at the office, he said.

"They preferred to use smartphone or tablet computers," he said.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Surabaya City Legislative Council Afghani Wardhana said the decision for new laptop procurement was at hands of new MPs.

Surabaya's MPs for the 2009-2014 received Hewlett-Packard (HP) laptops worth 15 million IDR each. Only 26 of 50 old MPs have returned laptops to the secretary of the city legislative council.
