REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON - Chairman of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Sidarto Danusubroto and President of the Moroccan Assembly of Councillors (Majlis al-Mustacharin) Mohammed Cheikh have agreed to boost cooperation between the parliaments of the two nations.

They reached an agreement during a meeting held at the office of the Moroccan Parliament, third secretary of the Indonesian Embassy in Rabat Muhammad Hartantyo noted on Tuesday.

At the meeting, both sides agreed to promote increased bilateral cooperation in various fields, particularly the trade sector. In the first half of 2014, bilateral trade between Indonesia and Morocco stood at 120 million USD with Indonesia recording a deficit of 47.3 million USD.

While in Morocco, the MPR chairman and the Majlis al-Mustacharin president visited a photo exhibition, which showcased the visit of Indonesia's founding father, first President Soekarno, to Morocco in 1960. Earlier, the Indonesian delegation met Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelillah Benkirane at the latter's office.

Indonesia played a significant role in Moroccan independence by inviting its freedom fighters to the Asia-Africa Conference held in Bandung, West Java, in 1955. Morocco gained its independence in 1956, and the then President Soekarno was the first head of state to visit the country in 1960
