REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Indonesian Cooperatives Council (Dekopin) Nurdin Halid called on people not to be swayed by investments that offer high interest, especially under the pretext of a cooperative.

"Do not be easily tempted because these are fraudulent under the guise of investment," Nurdin Halid said on Wednesday.

Nurdin pointed out that many cooperatives misused as a tool to raise funds from the public because of the lax control of the government.

No wonder so many investment frauds are being committed by some people who abuse the cooperative legal entity.

"The use of cooperatives as a cover to collect public funds should be an important lesson for the government to prevent it," he affirmed.

He remarked that the most important factor for the government is to overlook the cooperative cover optimally.

"The cooperative is an organization that is most appropriate in improving society's welfare, as long as based on the principles of cooperatives," he noted.

Nurdin stated that the community could build a shared prosperity through cooperation.

He also asked the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises to cooperate with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) intensively in regulating and supervising the financial services business, including raising public funds.

"Many cooperatives are available that collect public funds at a variety of business scales," he said.

Nurdin asserted that good cooperation and supervision will easily sort the supervisory authority between the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises and the OJK.

Earlier, The OJK had attempted to conduct a study related to the activities of a social gathering termed MMM (Mavrodi Mondial Money Box) in order to avoid loss.

"We had planned to conduct a study, but do not have direct authority. The responsibility of OJK is only to provide protection to the community," Deputy Director of Consumer Protection Tri Herdianto stated here on Wednesday.

The OJK has continued to provide protection to consumers through education, so that the people can be made aware of all activities related to financial services, especially illegal investment.

"People should be able to observe the trend and the mode used. People should not be tempted, so that they forget to use their logic," he asserted.

The OJK has conducted a study through unit officers for investment. The institutions involved included the police, the central bank, the Ministry of Commerce, Futures Exchange Supervisory Board (Bappebti), Attorney, and Cooperatives.

"From the study, it will be seen whether the MMM is one of the agencies that is a member of the task force, otherwise it will be handed over to the police," he noted.

The task force will invite MMM organizers related to the recruitment process until the disbursement of profits.
