REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Transportation, Evert Erenst Mangindaan said death toll during homecoming season in Eid al-Fitra declined compared to previous years. There were 2,741 traffic accidents during July 21 - August 2, 2014, a decline compared to 3,200 accidents in 2013.

"The death toll decreased from 686 victims in 2013 to 538 victims this year," Mangindaan said in a written statement on Tuesday as reported by Bilal Ramadhan.

Although the number of accidents and death toll decreased, the Ministry expressed its concern and evaluated the homecoming implementation this year. In addition, Mangindaan has tried to reduce the number of accidents optimally during Lebaran day.

Majority accidents happened at toll roads. It needs more attention. Deputy Minister of Transportation, Bambang Susantono said there were three strategies that could be applied to improve the smoothness of homecoming next year, namely the completion of road infrastructure, maritime transport capacity and optimalization of double track railway.

Cikampek-Palimanan toll road will be completed then it will reduce the load during homecoming season.
