REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Surabaya city in East Java will soon have a maritime vocational school to produce skilled workers in the marine sector.

"The maritime vocational school will be located in Balas Klumprik. It will focus on maritime technology including post-harvest and processing technology. Our sea is very rich in resources. It will be a pity if other nations take the resources only because we cannot process them," Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said when receiving 100 male and female cadets of the Naval Academy (ALL) of the 62nd class at the Surabaya City Hall on Sunday.

As a maritime nation, Surabaya residents are hopefully more interested in sea. Therefore, the presence of the maritime vocational school is a must, she said.

The Surabaya city administration has so far provided scholarships to local youths to study at the school of shipping to become ship's captains and navigators, she said.

Some 100 male and female cadets of the 62nd class will pursue higher education at the Naval Academy in Surabaya. They hail from different parts of Indonesia including Surabaya, Malang, Jakarta, Papua and Maluku.

During their meeting with the Surabaya mayor, the cadets were accompanied by deputy governor of the Naval Academy Commodore.
