Indonesian police restricts FBI authority in child molestation cases

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), will visit Indonesia to investigate child molestation cases at Jakarta International School (JIS) on Monday. Head of Public Relations in Indonesia's Police Headquarters, Ronnie F Sompie said that FBI had coordinated the plan since last week. 

"FBI will coordinate with Indonesian police related to its investigation at JIS," Sompie said. 

Yet, Sompie underlined that criminal cases at JIS was under full authority of Indonesian police and The cooperation with FBI was only limited to information exchange. 

"Criminal investigation in Indonesian jurisdiction is under full authority of Indonesian police. FBI can ask our help and exchange information with our institution," he added. 

FBI investigate a pedophile teacher, William James Vahey (64), who once worked at JIS from 1992 to 2002.  Vahey worked as a teacher at various private schools in a number of countries, including Indonesia. Vahey committed suicide last month after FBI opened an investigation into child porn images found on a flash disk belonging to him. 

Earlier this month, a new child molestation case was revealed when Th, a mother's victim, reported her son's case to the police on March 24, 2014. Her son, AK (6 years), was molested at the school toilet. The police then caught five suspects who work as cleaning service workers, namely Azwar, Zaenal, Awan, Agund, and a woman named Afriska Septiani.
